Homemade Granola

So, I tried something new today. Something I've never done, but always wanted to try.
I made homemade granola! Yum!
A plain batch to eat with my yogurt and fruit when I'm feeling like a healthy snack and a sweet batch with Craisins and M&M's for the rest of the time! (Which is a lot of the time when you're pregnant!)
My criteria as I looked for a recipe was that I needed to be able to find everything at my usual grocery store and each ingredient had to be something I had heard of before! Here's the recipe I followed:

In a large bowl, combine:
6 cups rough cut oats
1 cup almonds coarsely chopped
1 cup walnuts
1/2 cup each of sunflower seeds and sesame seeds
1/2 cup brown sugar
Mix the next three ingredients and add to the above oatmeal mixture, stirring well.
2/3 cup canola oil
2/3 cup honey
2 tablespoons water

Place granola on a baking sheet and bake in a 300 degree oven for 30-45 minutes, stirring 2-3 times. Once granola is cooled you can add any mix-ins (M&M's, Craisins, etc.)
(Recipe thanks to Julie Gilbert)
I'd love to hear your suggestions. What do you mix-in?

  4. Angie, that's a fabulous idea! I might sacrifice my plain batch for white chocolate chips... yum!!

Amber, the nuts are fairly expensive, but one batch should last you a long time, no need to double it. I'm guessing it cost about $10-$15 total

Leslie, don't eat all of the M&M's out of your batch first... although I should say "do as I say, not as I do!!"

    Thanks for your comments ladies!

  5. I LOVE granola. I ate it every. single. day on our cruise.
When I make homemade granola, I like to add dried cranberries and dried apples to it in the fall. Don't know why it has to be fall for dried apples, but it does. ;)

It was SO great to run into you the other day. Your mothering skills are wonderful.
    Hugs!!!
