Straightener Travel Pouch Tutorial

When I travel with my hair straightener there is always this little fear in me that I might scorch my clothes if I have to leave in a hurry while that precious thing is still hot.  I decided it was just about time to put that fear to rest, so I made a travel straighter pouch.
Of course she's cute, but she is also tough, and made out of thermal insulated lining (the same stuff you can use to make pot holders!)
Here are the supplies you need if you want to make one for yourself:
  • Two strips of any kind of decorative fabric 7 inches by 29 inches (I pieced together some scraps to make two strips)
  • One strip of insulated lining 7"x 29"
  • Sewing machine and thread
After you've cut out your three strips (two strips of fabric and one of lining), place them together like this: lining on the bottom followed by the fabric you want on the outside of our pouch with the right side facing up and finally, the fabric you want on the inside of your pouch with the right side facing down.  Pin these three strips together.
Sew all the way around three sides then flip the top layer of fabric (this was your fabric you chose for the inside of your pouch) around the other two, showing off your clean seams all the way around three sides.
Now finish off the final edge by turning the frayed ends in and sewing a straight stitch all the way across where my thumb is below.
Fold the end you just stitched towards the other end, leaving a flap of about 4 inches (that's the green part on the left in the picture below).  Now you'll stitch from where my thumb is to the bottom of the pouch on both sides.
(Here's an unnecessary picture of this step... I just thought it was a cool shot!)
OK, back to it... I stitched one final line at the top of the pouch on the flap because I noticed that the layers of batting and fabric wanted to separate a little.  This solved that problem.
I thought the flap needed a little something extra so I stitched a "T" using my zig-zag stitch on my regular sewing machine.  This is also the setting I use for applique.  You could go wild decorating the flap... covered button, ribbon, decorative stitching... have fun and may you have many good hair days while traveling!
