My Summer DIY Project... Part 2

Update on my (huge!) summer project:
All of the states have been cut out...
And ironed on to a piece of canvas.
Now all that's left is to embroider the state edges and pray my fingers don't fall off! :) I love the way this looks hanging in front of my window with the sun shining through, but its final resting place will be framed and hanging next to my boy's bunk beds.
I tried to choose a fabric that reminded me of someone I know from each state. You could say I have too much time on my hands, but whoa... that's not the case, so I guess my best excuse for doing something that cheesy is that I'm just a nerd!
(Update: Here's the finished project... good news, my fingers didn't fall off!)

This is such a great project. I can't wait to see it all completed. Glad you've got such a fun project to work on this summer. I'm in the process of finishing up my first quilt...and adjusting to life with 2 kids! Happy July!

I love it! What a fabulous idea for wall art; if I find myself with too much time on MY hands (Ha!) or if I am simply overcome by my own nerdiness, I just may borrow your idea. : )

I love this! I've been eying the one at Pottery Barn but haven't broken down, yet.

Did you trace the states?

ooohh I didn't know they had these at pottery barn... humph! They stole my thunder. I did trace the states on the map then laminated them and cut them out. I laminated them so we could use them for other projects.

Sarah - this is amazing! I found your blog recently and am loving it. I was hoping you could share the approximate size of the map you used. Our smallish town store had only one size of USA map and it looked smaller than the one you used. Any tips would be great!

Allison, the map I used was about 2 1/2- 3 feet from sea to shining sea!

Hi Sarah,
I was wondering what adhesive backing you used? I got my map and it's all cut out, but before I start cutting fabric I want to make sure I have the right backing (I'm new to the crafting world:)

Allison, I used the iron-on adhesive backing. It came in a purple wrapper if that helps. I want to see what yours looks like when you finish... could you email me a pic? That's the whole reason I do the blogging thing... I love sharing ideas that will bless your family in some way!!

sarah, that's incredible! i love the fabrics you chose! i don't envy you all those little tiny turns when stitching it, but i can't wait to see how it turns out! ps- you might be about to find out why those things cost like 300 bucks from land of nod/pbk etc. :)
